Leading from the Middle: Benefits of a Physician Leadership Program

#alert 2020-04-01 00:00:00

Physician leadership represents a critical component for the success of academic medical institutions, ensuring a physician perspective regarding clinical, education, and research programs, as well as administrative activities. Physicians play an especially important role in leading change in academic institutions because of the implications of change for other physicians at the institution and the direct influence of physicians on patient care and academic missions. For physicians to lead effectively, a variety of leadership competencies are essential.... Read More

MD 0244 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHWEST TX...SOUTHWESTERN THROUGH NORTH-CENTRAL OK...EXTREME SOUTHERN KS.
Mesoscale Discussion 0244NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK0342 AM CDT Sat Mar 28 2020Areas affected...Portions of northwest TX...southwestern throughnorth-central OK...extreme southern KS.Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 280842Z - 281045ZProbability of Watch Issuance...20 percentSUMMARY...Thunderstorms should move rapidly northeastward across thediscussion area through the pre-dawn hours. Severe hail or stronggusts are possible in the best-organized cells, but the threatappears too marginal and isolated for a watch at this time.DISCUSSION...Surface mesoanalysis at 08Z showed a strengthening lowover southeastern KS near DDC, with quasistationary frontal zoneacross parts of extreme northwestern OK and south-central/southeastern KS. A Pacific front has overtaken the dryline overwestern OK and northwest TX, and was drawn from there southwestwardacross northwest TX to near FST. As large-scale ascent spreads overthe moistening low-level warm sector preceding the Pacific front, increasing convection, with widely scattered to scattered embeddedthunderstorms, has developed just ahead of and nearly parallel tothe front. As of 0830Z, this activity was evident in radarcomposites, lightning data and satellite imagery from Knox County TXto Blaine County OK, eastward to near an SPS-CHK line.Modifications to regional 00Z soundings, and to the 06Z LMNsounding, are generally consistent with short-fused model soundingsfrom RAP and HRRR across this region, showing:1. A stable boundary layer with 100-200 J/kg MLCINH, underlying2. The basal EML inversion, which coincides with a well-definedlayer of dryline, 3. A ribbon of roughly 2000 J/kg MUCAPE, decreasing eastward butstill favorable for deep convection,4. Very strong deep shear -- with 70-80-kt effective-shear vectors-- but oriented with a substantial component parallel to the zone ofascent. The latter factor appears to be influencing a messy, quasi-linearmode with embedded stronger cells early in the convective evolution.Given the CAPE/shear parameter space, the intense flow aloft, andthe presence of that dry layer, enough parcel acceleration may occurthrough the near-surface static stability to transfer gustsapproaching or briefly exceeding severe limits to the surface. Sustained, semi-discrete cells -- whose longevity is in doubt giventhe kinematic geometry -- could offer large hail.Though the situation appears too marginal/isolated for a watch, onemay become needed if convection organizes more robustly thancurrently anticipated...Edwards.. 03/28/2020...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...ATTN...WFO...TSA...ICT...FWD...OUN...SJT...LAT...LON 33369966 35009882 35999826 36659810 37179707 36949641 35959635 34759728 33359866 33119947 33369966 ... Machine learning puts a new spin on spin models

#alert 2020-03-28 04:00:00

Tokyo, Japan - Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University have used machine learning to study spin models, used in physics to study phase transitions. Previous work showed that image/handwriting classifying AI could be applied to distinguish states in the simplest models. The team showed the approach is applicable to more complex models and found that an AI trained on one model and applied to another could reveal key similarities between distinct phases in different systems....
